Historically I am back and forth on romantics, usually dependent on the players I am with and their level of comfort with the matter. Though sometimes I just incidentally end up finding another character with such a level of chemistry that if I’m being honest with my own, stuff just happens.
This happened to be the case of my more notable love story, the one between two Mafia members in the middle of an ongoing war. Mine was a fairly brutal enforcer, and the other was a pragmatic assassin, and so they often crossed paths and between them had ongoing arguments about the method to deal with any given problem. Which often led to competition and physical conflict. Given time they grew a degree of respect, and interaction, instruction, and an understanding of two very dark elements in a dark world which few folks would ever understand at the same level they did each other.
So yeah, sometimes it just feels like characters come together. And the more narrative you have the easier it becomes.
As for NPC’s it can depend, like legitimately my Shadowrun character was dating two of his contacts, so it was something that was gonna happen. Otherwise there is the up in the air chemistry, and conversation with the GM about if this is cool.
I will always be a fan of that Monsterhearts game.
Also yeah I’ve met a couple people via character dating, though the two are not mutally connected.
Daniel I will say that typically your NPCs are very distant, inhuman, disgusting, or hilariously expendable.
One character, screaming his/her love to the heavens. Hmm, not a long term character but a part of the Unhallowed Metropolis universe, kinda thinking about Penny Black. Life as an Undertaker is hilariously mortal and there is just something about the idea of staring down one last group of monsters, last shell loaded in that monstrous shotgun, saved for herself so she would never turn to think again on those few happy moments with the freakish form of Dr. Israel. And a single declaration of love so that the last screeches of her mind across the etherium become those feelings, that she hopes he is somehow doing some horrific expiriment to hear.

Cupid Descriptions have never been more fucked up. And when your base lone is an armed winged infant, that’s a feat. Also, am the only one that instantly thought Byron whispering Moira’s name as he bled out?

See this was actually part of how I played Garrick Snow in our a song of ice and fire game.
As a bastard he had no chance of actually gaining anything more than a “quick and dirty ‘romance'” but he wanted more than that. He played on his bastard reputation as a letch but actually he did really want to get a chance at a proper relationship.
It was one of the main reasons he was willing to literally risk his life fighting the Mountain in the grand melee to gain legitimacy. Yes there was duty to the house of grimwood, but also its his only hope to gain a chance at love.
Not that Garrick would mind catching Loras either… But he’s taken.
