It is the common refrain of a GM that combat encounters rarely work out the way that you plan them. You tempt your players into turning on each other, it turns into a one-hit kill massacre. You have a weird monster with interesting effects and require a combination of luck and tactical planning? You get the tactical planning, they get the luck.
For me the best encounters are like the emotion beast, where you just suggest your players maybe are turning on each other, and watching them just run with it. And then you get to join in with finding a way to calm everyone down before massacres occur!
mmm, more inhuman horrors. I always like the implication that the UM world is actually, like, unraveling. a Dark Towersy feel that the rules of nature are coming apart and that bad things from Outside are filling in the gaps. I interpret it as a cosmic horror story on a world that’s only just beginning to die, whose symptoms will get much worse before the end.
